Classroom Participation: Unfair and Arbitrary

Participation grading is commonplace in higher education — but is it actually fair? We examine the tension between its proven learning benefits and the bias that often shapes how it's evaluated.

In the world of higher education, especially in programs focused on policy and affairs, marking contributions related to in-class participation is commonplace. However, is this a fair and equitable form of evaluation?

The consensus around this question suggests that participation grading can, in fact, be an unfair practice, with resulting marks influenced heavily by bias of many sources and types. Research in higher education assessment has shown that instructor perceptions can be shaped—often unintentionally—by factors such as gender, race, accent, confidence level, and prior familiarity with a student. Implicit bias studies consistently demonstrate that subjective evaluation environments create room for disparities, even when instructors aim to be objective. In discussion-based classrooms, where grading often depends on perceived quality, frequency, or "impact" of comments, the lack of structured measurement can further amplify inconsistency.

At the same time, the value of participation in a classroom environment cannot be understated. Decades of educational research point to active learning as one of the strongest predictors of student success. Studies show that students who participate in classroom activities and conversations demonstrate improved critical thinking, stronger retention of material, deeper conceptual understanding, and greater engagement with course content. A large-scale meta-analysis published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that active learning approaches significantly reduce failure rates compared to passive lecture formats. Participation-based classrooms, when implemented effectively, create space for debate, perspective-sharing, and real-time synthesis of ideas—skills especially critical in fields such as business, public policy, medicine, and law.

This creates a clear tension: participation is pedagogically valuable, yet the way it is measured often lacks transparency and standardization.

So if the benefits are clear, but the methods of evaluation are not, how do we go about fixing this outstanding issue?

A growing body of literature on assessment design suggests that clarity, consistency, and data-driven evaluation are key to fairness. Rubric-based grading, frequency tracking, and structured feedback loops have all been shown to improve reliability in subjective assessment categories.
